Public vs. Private University Searching for the right college or university can be a long and painful process. There are undoubtedly hundreds if not thousands of colleges to review. In deciding on a college, you may take in a count the city, the state, and the status of the college or university. But the crucial decision in determining a college or university is if you want to attend a college or a university. Also you must decide if it should be a public or private one. In this essay, I will examine the differences and the similarities of a private and a public university. Private and public universities have many similarities and differences. Starting in admissions, both kinds of universities have similar minimum high school course, standardized test, and class rank requirements for applicants. Applications for enrollment to public universities exceed private universities. When it comes to acceptance, private universities have a higher rate than public universities due to the overcrowding on public campuses. On the cost of going to a university, private campuses are very expensive compared to the public universities. This cost is said to finance better facilities and staff, but you can argue that public campuses have as good if not better facilities and staff also. The scholarships available to pay for the cost in both kinds of universities are more or less the same. On transfer admissions, both are more or less the same. But on the units transferable, public universities are superior because it is transferable in all public universities within the state. One private university units may not be excepted at another. Transferable units are very useful in case you decide to transfer an another university. The undergraduate programs for both kinds of universities are more or less the same. Both kinds have certain specialize undergraduate programs that are very competitive and very hard to get in. Also the graduate programs for both are more or less the same, but both are competitive and very demanding. The alumni connection is much better at private universities than public ones. This connection can be helpful because it can help you find a job or intern in a certain corporation. Deciding on a college or university involves deciding on all the factors available. Heinrich and Charlotte Hahn had three other children, Otto was the youngest. Living under the influences of war and economic turmoil, he was a determined young chemist. At age fifteen, Otto would experiment in his laundry room with chemicals. As expected, his mother did not appreciate this, and she encouraged him to enroll in an Organic Chemistry class, which he did. After high school, Hahn studied Chemistry at Marburg and Munich University. He later went on to receive his doctorate degree in the same field in 1901. Son Tay Raid During the Vietnam War The raid on Son Tay prison camp occurred during the Vietnam War.  Colonel Simons and his men captured Son Tay on November 21, 1970. Armies Commanders United States Colonel Arthur D. Bull SimonsLieutenant Colonel Elliot Bud Sydnor56 Special Forces soldiers, 92 airmen, 29 aircraft North Vietnam Leaders: UnknownNumbers: Unknown Son Tay Raid Background In 1970, the US had identified the names of over 500 American POWs who were being held by the North Vietnamese. Sources reported that these prisoners were being held in atrocious conditions and were being cruelly treated by their captors. That June, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Earle G. Wheeler, authorized the formation a fifteen-member planning group to address the issue. Operating under the codename Polar Circle, this group studied the possibility of conducting a night raid on a North Vietnamese POW camp and found that an attack on the camp at Son Tay was feasible and should be attempted. Son Tay Raid Training Two months later, Operation Ivory Coast commenced to organize, plan, and train for the mission. Overall command was given to Air Force Brigadier General LeRoy J. Manor, with Special Forces Colonel Arthur Bull Simons leading the raid itself. While Manor assembled a planning staff, Simons recruited 103 volunteers from the 6th and 7th Special Forces Groups. Based at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, and working under the name Joint Contingency Task Group, Simons men began studying models of the camp and rehearsing the attack on a full-size replica. While Simons men were training, the planners identified two windows, October 21 to 25 and November 21 to 25, which possessed the ideal moonlight and weather conditions for the raid. Manor and Simons also met with Admiral Fred Bardshar to set up a diversionary mission to be flown by naval aircraft. After 170 rehearsals at Eglin, Manor informed the Secretary of Defense, Melvin Laird, that all was ready for the October attack window. Following a meeting at the White House with National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, the raid was delayed until November. Son Tay Raid Planning After using the extra time for further training, JCTG moved to its forward bases in Thailand. For the raid, Simons selected 56 Green Berets from his pool of 103. These men were divided into three groups each with a different mission. The first was the 14-man assault group, Blueboy, which was to land inside the camp compound. This would be supported by the 22-man command group, Greenleaf, which would land outside, then blow a hole in the compound wall and support Blueboy. These were supported by the 20-man Redwine which was to provide security against North Vietnamese reaction forces. Son Tay Raid Execution The raiders were to approach the camp by air aboard helicopters with fighter cover above to deal with any North Vietnamese MiGs. All told, 29 aircraft played a direct role in the mission. Due to the impending approach of Typhoon Patsy, the mission was moved up one day to November 20. Departing their base in Thailand at 11:25 PM on November 20, the raiders had an uneventful flight to the camp as the Navys diversionary raid had achieved its purpose. At 2:18 AM, the helicopter carrying Blueboy successfully crash landed inside the compound at Son Tay. Racing from the helicopter, Captain Richard J. Meadows led the assault team in eliminating the guards and securing the compound. Three minutes later, Col. Simons landed with Greenleaf approximately a quarter mile from their intended LZ. After attacking a nearby North Vietnamese barracks and killing between 100 to 200, Greenleaf re-embarked and flew to the compound. In Greenleafs absence, Redwine, led by Lieutenant Colonel Elliott P. â€Å"Bud† Sydnor, landed outside Son Tay and executed Greenleafs mission as per the operations contingency plans. After conducting a thorough search of the camp, Meadows radioed Negative Items to the command group signaling that no POWs were present. At 2:36, the first group departed by helicopter, followed by the second nine minutes later. The raiders arrived back in Thailand at 4:28, approximately five hours after departing, having spent a total of twenty-seven minutes on the ground. Son Tay Raid Aftermath Brilliantly executed, American casualties for the raid were one wounded. This occurred when a helicopter crewman broke his ankle during the insertion of Blueboy. In addition, two aircraft were lost in the operation. North Vietnamese casualties were estimated at between 100 to 200 killed. Intelligence later revealed that the POWs at Son Tay had been moved to a camp fifteen miles away in July. While some intelligence indicated this immediately prior to the raid, there was not the time to change the target. Despite this intelligence failure, the raid was deemed a tactical success due to its nearly flawless execution. For their actions during the raid, the members of the task force were awarded six Distinguished Service Crosses, five Air Force Crosses, and eighty-three Silver Stars. Works of Dickens Essay Compare the roles of institutions in A Kestrel for a Knave and the works of Dickens  Dickens and Hines use writing techniques to portray their institutions as impoverished and brutal places. Dickens is especially good at this. He can bring places to life with similes and metaphors. Dickens and Hines have added a fiery, tyrannical character in the shape of Mr Gradgrind, who every one fears and Mr Gryce. Both of whom are headmasters.  At the beginning of Hard Times Dickens disguises his characters by not giving them names, he does this to draw the reader into the novel. The Speaker and the schoolmaster, and the third grown person present  Both of the novels, although written 100 years apart show very little change in the schooling the children received. The authors show their institutions as plain and bare. Dickens even goes, as far as to say that the school room in Hard Times is a vault, not letting anyone in or out. monotonous vault of a schoolroom  Dickens likes to use repetition of words. Especially Facts and emphasis. He does this to show the squareness of Mr Gradgrind. Dickens does this to illustrate how he wants every thing to be regimented and perfect. Gradgrind had the premonition that all the children he schooled were only good for factory fodder. Hines has the same thought but did not put it so blatantly in his writing; this is because he does not want to sound so right wing. The two books are set in industrial towns. Hines does not name his town but it is in Northern England. Dickens named his town Coketown, because this is a major part of the smelting of iron, extremely important in the Victorian age and the industrial revolution, because without it none of the steps forward would have been made to modernise products and industries.  Both authors show that the children in their books have no prospects. They leave school only knowing enough to get them into a factory or coal mine.  Hines has injected a positive influence into A Kestrel for a Knave in the shape of Mr Farthing, Billys Teacher. Mr Farthing is a kind and gentle man a far cry from the harsh environment in which Billy lives. There is a profound lack of anything worth living for in Hard Times. This is because all of the children in the school in Hard Times are just going to end there lifes in a pit or factory, again this is because society in those days looked upon the working class as workers so this is were they where destined to be.  Hines and Dickens use the same writing techniques to gain full effect on the reader. For example they both use similes and metaphor. Institutions of the time consisted of workhouses, factories and schools. The workhouses, horrible places to live and work. Often run by money hungry fat cats, purely for the profit. They did not care how the children should be treated. These places were often very regimented, dull and laborious (as in the table scene in Oliver Twist, where Oliver Twist and colleges sat at two long tables eating the same food at the same pace.) There was also a lack of equality. In the factories people were paid next to nothing for very hard, dangerous work. It was not uncommon for a worker to lose a finger or even a whole hand because the machinery was not safety guarded. The schools were run like business. Sometimes the head teachers had deals with factories to send there school leavers to their factories or down their mines. Dickens describes Coketown with metaphors of animals this is I think to show that the inhabitants of Coketown were only animals, this also adds to the primitive nature of the town. Coke town is primitive because everybody fights for the best jobs and positions in the town. Also the way that Dickens describes the buildings as animals makes this scene primitive. Mr Gradgrind believes heavily in Utilitarianism. This concept originally the brainchild of Jeremy Bentham is made a mockery of by Dickens in Hard Times, with his ironic quotes and lines.  Dickens and Hines both use institutions in their novels to illustrate the poverty of the industrial town. The reader is able to sympathise with the characters in these novels through the ways that the two authors write.

Mother to Son by Langston Hughes Essay

â€Å"Mother to Son†, published in 1922 by Langston Hughes, was one of the most famous poems he had written. Hughes was African-American and was born in 1902. While living in the 1900’s Hughes and his family experienced the hardships of racism, discrimination, and slavery. Therefore, this poem is not only words of encouragement from a mother to a son, but also words of encouragement to the entire African American community. This poem of inspiration let the community know that the difficulties that they all had to endure at the time were felt by all and that they were not alone in the struggle. Hughes wrote this from the standpoint of a mother encouraging her son to keep going no matter what hardships he may experience. She explained that life is hard and he is not the only one who has had to endure the experience of life’s hard lessons. The poem passes on a message from a mother to her son instructing him that he must remain optimistic despite the obstacles that life can bring. The mother compares her life to a set of old broken down wooden stairs. Using the metaphor that â€Å"life for me has not been any set of crystal stairs† (2, 20), she implies to her son that her life has not been easy or pleasant either. The mother continues to tell her son of the obstacles that she has overcome by describing the old wooden stairs. She says â€Å"it has had tacks in it and splinters and boards torn up and places with no carpet on the floor – bare.† (3-7) The tacks on the stairs were placed there by another person representing the wrong doings to her by another person and the splinters may have been the result of her actions. These tacks and splinters symbolize the cruel reality of life, as opposed to the ideal fantasy life, such as having a set of â€Å"crystal stairs†. Through the voice of the mother, Hughes uses the set of stairs as a metaphor for life and the hardships that they can bring. In spite of these obstacles the mother has moved up the stairs and has overcome them. She tells him she has â€Å"been a climbin’ on, and reachin’ landin’s, and turnin’ corners, and sometimes going in the dark when there ain’t been no light† (9-13). She means here that sometimes she was blind to where the  stairs or her life was leading her and the direction was unknown, but she still continued. The mother continues to encourage her son by telling him â€Å"not to turn back or set down on the steps ’cause you finds it’s kinder hard† (14-16). She is telling her him not to give up regardless of how hard things may seem at the time and if he continues on he will eventually overcome these obstacles that are causing him such despair. She believes that once you stop it is harder to get started again and she encourages him by telling him how she’s â€Å"still goin, honey and I’se sill climin’ and that life for me ain’t been no crystal stair† (18-20). She also tells him that she has made it and still has to encounter these obstacles even in her golden years and she did not give up and has not given up and if she is strong enough to make it then so can he. Through a mother’s voice Hughes uses metaphors, symbolism, and imagery. He also conveys a message of encouragement. Durring the time this he wrote this poem the message may have been directed towards the African American community; however, today the message is directed to all who feel like giving into the hard times that life can and will bring. Hughes also reminds us that we are not alone in these hard times and that everyone experiences the same hard times in some form or another. Langston Hughes’ died in 1967; I hope he knew that this poem spoke words of encouragement not only to the African American race but also to the rest of us needing some inspiration. His poem reminds up to be hopeful and to not give up on ourselves.

Cyberslacking a term used to describe employees who surf the net for their personal use such as writing e-mail or indulging in other internet-related activities at work that are not related to their jobs. These activities are performed during periods of time when they are being paid by their employer. The individual who perform such work is known as Cyberslacker while the whole act is called Cyberslacking. In contrast Robert Nozick (1974) state that â€Å"Rights-based ethical theory assumes that individuals have certain entitlements that should be respected such as freedom of speech, the right of privacy, and due process†. It describes about developing a moral system that identifies the right of others and behaves accordingly to that rights. As high speed internet is basic requirements for the IT industry for their development, some employee may be misusing the facility for their personal purpose stating that they are doing multitasking. Workers in company spending time on internet for the personal use sending emails, surfing internet, shopping online are the common issue faced by today’s IT industry . As e-mail and high-speed Internet access have become standard-issue office equipment, uncontrolled abuse of computers in the workplace is affecting the productivity. For company, Cyberslacking is becoming a distributive and a complex problem in the IT industry. Different type of employee can prosecute in Cyberslacking, it is usually shows that employees in lower positions in the organisation with access of internet and their higher status colleagues, such as manager, are the main offenders. I strongly believe that most of the company get strongly affected by Cyberslacking. The time employees misuse the resources, but for which they are paid, as well as the company paying the internet charges and electricity bills and equipment are properly considered objects of theft. Something of economic value of company has obviously been stolen know as indirect theft so sorting out all these issue within company is very complicated. Cyberslacking effect the IT Company your work its productivity ,Higher wages ,economy ,increase network traffic ,staff member ,efficiency and security . Some company use different kind of softwares to monitor their workers. These programs can record every keystroke an employee types, even capturing words that the individual later erases. The same software tracks which Web sites a worker visits, and issues an alert when an employee begins surfing an X-rated website. Installation of proxy servers to prevent programs from accessing resources like Chat, Instant Messenger, or some online shopping and gambling services. Now monitoring the workers raise the question invasion of privacy of workers. As it is seems to be perfectly legal to monitor the workers while working in IT Company. While morally a workers think it is right to surf the internet as the working hours constantly invade their homes as they put the hours of effort for their office works. So it is the perfect situation where right based ethical issue describe two types of contract one is legal contracts where other is moral contracts . Both contracts are based on rights of individual or groups and both compel about the respecting the rights. As worker think doing no harm to company by using the office resources for their personal use. As social contract include the rights for workers or individual such freedom of speech, the right of privacy, the right for vote, the right of access to basic education and the right of access of health care . Also IT Company got its own rules and regulation which is need to followed by workers with in company. So there is a maximum chance of conflict between rights of worker within company and as an individual. Respecting the others right and using individual right effectively might help to minimise this problem. There are only individual people, different individual people, with their own individual lives. Using one of these people for the benefit of others uses him and benefits the others. What happens is that something is done to him for the sake of the others. Talk of an overall social good covers this To use a person in this way does not sufficiently respect the fact and take account of the fact that he is a separate person, that his is the only life he has. So as an individual if some one follow the rights of individual there is always a maximum chance of more Cyberslacking . As he give more priority to his own rights and giving minimum priority to IT Company Rights. There are some positive and negative rights on these issues, negative rights which need to be protected from interference e. g. right to vote, right to privacy. And negative right should be respected by the action of individual who abuse these rights. So in IT Company there should be some guidelines for addressing such issue so that workers will focus on company productivity rather than wasting their time in cyber world . Positive rights require positive action it is also known as welfare right such as right to basic education. Providing basic education and basic health care rights for workers with in company maximise the bonding between IT Company and its workers. As workers feel that their company addressing the basic health and education rights for them so they emotionally attached with the company. As we know ACS codes of ethics state that one should be places the interest of public above your personal choice. So as employee of IT Company own should place the interest of company above his personal interest. So giving the priorities to the company work rather Surfing internet using social networks while in work . ACS also address the issue of honesty, competence, professional development and professionalism . So if an employee are honest they should be give the priority for the works when they are working for company. Be honest with your company and yourself. Follow the rules and regulation of your company . More you work for company more professional and experience are the workers and increase their professional development . Competing and developing the professionalism in the company will help to minimise the Cyberslacking Legal rights such as company rights designed by the lawmakers of the company which should be followed by the employee and employers of the company should address the issue such as penalizing the employee if they caught using office resources for their personal use. While rewarding employee who gives the information about others using an internet for personal purpose. Beneficial rights, welfare rights for the employee so that they focus on the company productivity . While moral rights for individual who respects the others right which is decided by the workers culture and the relationship between company and other workers. Morally supporting your company for the better productivity. A set of moral rules to govern the workers in the company is useful for addressing such issues. And a company capable of forcing these rights and rules would be beneficial for both company and employee. So it helps in developing common goods within company which eventually help to reduce a Cyberslacking in the IT Company. So in conclusion Cyberslacking affect the IT Company by minimising its productivity as company workers focus on their personal issues using office resources and giving minimum effort for the company goals. Company using different kind of software to monitor minimize it. Right based theory uses two concept legal rights and moral rights . Balancing the legal rights and moral rights in the company rules and regulation will help to minimise the Cyberlacking . Addressing ACS code of ethics to develop a legal right of the company is useful for this issue. However there is always out chance that moral responsibilities that exist out side the legal responsibilities. Of legal age essays I feel that the legal drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen. In foreign countries children are given wine and alcoholic drinks at dinner. This I feel promotes alcohol awareness. I also feel that if people eighteen to twenty were able to drink legally the appeal of drinking would not be there. A lot of people quit smoking and binge drinking as soon as they turn eighteen and twenty-one, respectively. People drink underage for many reasons, parental problems, peer-pressure, and sometimes simply because it is illegal. Parental problems are a main reason for underage drinking it creates baggage. This baggage carries with the freshman into their first year in college, and many students are overwhelmed by it and are not ready for the excitement and risks that they will encounter during their first year at a university. From classes to sex, from relationships to drinking, from religion to social clubs, students decide the order in which to try them. The thrill of entering a college bar where mom and dad cannot bear witness to the illegal activity of underage drinking can excite some people. The host does hold the responsibility of all guests at a party, and what happened at these parties may not be dismissed, but perhaps the people responsible for their deaths is a greater one, the ones that made the statement that "you must be at least twenty-one years old to enter this bar." The solution that lawmakers and people in power find when those who are underage get sick or die from the effects of alcohol is to tighten the reigns on the control of bars by restricting the customers whom they can honor to a specific age group.
